Sterling misses out on England selection again

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling was again left out by England manager Gareth Southgate as he named his squad for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Sterling, who has earned 82 caps for his country and was once a key part of Southgate's forward line, has now missed five successive England squads. Despite Southgate saying the door remains open, time is clearly running out for Sterling to force his way back into the reckoning for the Euro 2024 finals. Manchester City's John Stones misses out because of injury while Chelsea's Reece James is also not included despite recently returning from a lengthy injury lay-off. "I'm super excited about the tournament, we're really gearing towards the next tournament and I think everybody in international football is always living from tournament to tournament.

This matter should go no further," Onana wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. loadingGarnacho has made no comment about his deleted post or about being contacted by the FA. Man Utd show signs of life, but City offer real test

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Sixth-placed Newcastle United will have to shrug off the disappointment of their Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

CNN —Manchester United relied on two unlikely heroes – goalkeeper André Onana and defender Harry Maguire – in a much-needed Champions League victory against FC Copenhagen. Onana's penalty save denied Copenhagen late in the game. The Cameroonian international has made several errors since joining United this season, including in a Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich last month. The penalty save went some way to atoning for those mishaps, and Onana was duly mobbed by his teammates immediately after his heroics. “I’m very pleased, it was a narrow escape as we needed to win,” ten Hag told reporters after the match.

"Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana." MANCHESTER, England, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Harry Maguire and Andre Onana, two of Manchester United's biggest targets of fan criticism, earned a huge measure of redemption in their squad's 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday -- and praise from manager Erik ten Hag. Maguire, whose abuse from supporters had former player David Beckham reach out to him in support, headed home in the 72nd minute, while Onana saved a penalty in the final seconds of the match for United's first Champions League win of the season. Ten Hag said defender Maguire, who was also excellent in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at Sheffield United, is playing much more proactively in possession. "Stepping in passing vertical, defending also on front foot, stepping in defending forward, very confident in the duels, he is dominating, dominating his opponents," Ten Hag said. "There is a great spirit and they are together and that is important always as a team, the team is more than the sum of the individuals," Ten Hag said.

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he sympathises with current incumbent Erik ten Hag who is under pressure after a poor start to the season. It's a dream job, but it's difficult," Solskjaer said in an interview with The Athletic. "It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong," Solskjaer said. Solskjaer never won a trophy as a coach at United, the closest being the 2021 Europa League final when they lost to Villarreal on penalties. His reign ended after a 4-1 drubbing at Watford nearly two years ago -- a performance Solskjaer said he knew would result in him losing his job.

Sept 13 (Reuters) - England manager Gareth Southgate defended Harry Maguire after Scotland fans sarcastically mocked the defender, who scored an own goal in a friendly on Tuesday which England won 3-1 at Hampden Park. The Manchester United defender inadvertently handed Scotland a lifeline by clumsily prodding a low cross into his own net in the 67th minute. "There has been ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly," Southgate said after the match. The 30-year-old Maguire was stripped of the captaincy by his club Manchester United in July and has struggled for first-team football at Old Trafford. Ten Hag primed to end false dawns at Man United

Since United last won the Premier League title under Alex Ferguson in 2013, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all failed to revive former glories - but Ten Hag appears to be making progress. Last year, he took charge of a United side that had collected their lowest-ever Premier League points tally (58) in the 2021-22 season and were in a five-year trophy drought. The turnaround has been remarkable, with a top-four finish in the Premier League, the League Cup trophy and a place in the FA Cup final to show for last season. "I think the difference is, with reference to last year, now we have the foundation with this squad," Ten Hag told reporters. If Ten Hag can stop the uncertainty over the club's ownership from spilling over into his dressing room, United have reason to believe they can challenge seriously to win the Premier League and end the recent dominance of Manchester City.

We have to learn that you keep going, you carry on," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion. But Ten Hag said the 30-year-old England defender remained a key member of his squad. "I'm thinking about improving this team and these players, that's my job with the coaching staff and the players. We have all our focus on this process and not on other processes that will distract you," Ten Hag added.
